About Demon Cleaner

Demon Cleaner, from Welcome to Sky Valley (1994), was the album's first single and reached the UK chart; Tool later covered it live with Scott Reeder on stage. Homme wrote it, and the most-played Songsterr tab has his guitars and Reeder's bass in C Standard (C F B♭ E♭ G C). The riff never touches the open low C: in that tab the commonest lowest note is the open String 4, B♭, and on the record the low notes TuneLit hears most are E♭ and B♭.

TuneLit measured the album about 8 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442.1), and Demon Cleaner reads right on it, so the album's Tune button, C Standard +8 ¢, is the setting. The check from the audio agrees with C as the lowest string.

An older Songsterr tab, Demon Cleaner Ver. 2, is written in E Standard. Its shapes are fine, but it sounds two whole steps higher than the record; keep its frets and tune all six strings down to C Standard to play along. Because the song sits in the middle strings, tune String 4 (B♭) and String 3 (E♭) with extra care.

Tip: Check String 4 (B♭) against the verse riff; it carries the song more than the low C does.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C Standard, every string +8 ¢, the notes Demon Cleaner was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down 4 half steps. No tuner that knows C Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 4, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Demon Cleaner sits 8 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Demon Cleaner along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Demon Cleaner instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in C Standard +8 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Demon Cleaner moves up 3 half steps and 92 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
