About Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop
Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop is the third song of Welcome to Sky Valley (1994), the end of the album's first movement. Every tab puts Homme's guitar and Scott Reeder's bass in C Standard (C F B♭ E♭ G C). The riff's root is not the low C, though: in the Songsterr tab the open String 5, F, is the lowest note in about a third of the guitar part, and the open String 6 is never played at all.
TuneLit measured the album about 8 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442.1), and this song reads within 2 ¢ of that, so the album's Tune button fits. TuneLit's check from the audio leans a half step up on this song, but that is a known weakness of the method: when a song never plays its open low string, the check cannot see it. The tabs' C Standard stands.
For playing along, that means String 5 is your reference. Tune it to F carefully, then bring String 6 to C so the occasional low chord is in tune too. A tab in E Standard with the riff on the open A string is the same shape; keep the frets and tune down two whole steps.
Tip: Tune String 5 (F) against the main riff first; on this song it does the job the low C does elsewhere.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C Standard, every string +8 ¢, the notes Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop was recorded in.
- From E Standard: Every string down 4 half steps. No tuner that knows C Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 4, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop sits 8 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
