About Whitewater

Whitewater closes Welcome to Sky Valley (1994): an eight-minute song by Brant Bjork. It is in C Standard (C F B♭ E♭ G C), with Scott Reeder's bass in C too. Like Supa Scoopa, its riffs lean on the open String 5: in the Songsterr tab F is the commonest lowest note, with the open String 4, E♭, close behind, and the open low C appears only now and then.

TuneLit measured this song apart from the rest of the album. The record as a whole sits about 8 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442.1), but Whitewater reads at concert pitch, about 1 ¢ flat, so its own Tune button sets plain C Standard at A 440. Nine cents is small, but over eight minutes of sustained chords you will hear the beat if you keep the album's setting.

The check from the audio confirms C as the open low string. In the copy TuneLit measured, the track also runs on into the hidden piece Lick Doo; it is not part of the song.

Tip: Use Whitewater's own button (A 440), and tune String 5 to F against the first riff.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C Standard, the notes Whitewater was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down 4 half steps. No tuner that knows C Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 4, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Whitewater sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Whitewater along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Whitewater instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in C Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Whitewater moves up 4 half steps and 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
