About Rock and Roll

A fast twelve-bar rocker in A from Led Zeppelin IV (1971), opened by John Bonham's drums, with Ian Stewart on piano. It is plain E Standard, and it came from the same Headley Grange session as Boogie with Stu, released later on Physical Graffiti.

This is the one song on the album TuneLit could not measure: the estimator found no steady reading anywhere in it, so Tune uses the album's E Standard −11 ¢ (A ≈ 437.2). Its rough reading points about 40 ¢ flat, close to Boogie with Stu, which measures about 38 ¢ flat (A ≈ 430).

So the button may be off by about 30 ¢ here, enough to hear. If your guitar sounds sharp against the record at −11 ¢, lower the reference to about A 430 and fine-tune by ear. The strings stay in E Standard either way; only the reference moves.

Tip: If the guitar sounds sharp against the record at the button's setting, lower the reference to about A 430 and fine-tune by ear.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string −11 ¢, the notes Rock and Roll was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Rock and Roll sits 11 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Rock and Roll along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Rock and Roll instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard −11 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Rock and Roll moves up 11 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
