About Crawling
Crawling, the fifth track on Hybrid Theory (2000) and a Grammy winner for Best Hard Rock Performance, pairs a synth figure with heavy guitar chords in the chorus. Songsterr writes two guitar parts, a rhythm part for Mike Shinoda and a lead part for Brad Delson, both in Drop C♯ (C♯ G♯ C♯ F♯ A♯ D♯), the album's tuning: all six strings a half step down, the 6th a further whole step.
On the record Crawling reads about 2 cents flat, and Hybrid Theory as a whole sits at concert pitch, so a plain A 440 tuner and Drop C♯ are all you need; that is what Tune opens. The semitone check is about as sure as it gets here (0.999): the record's lowest notes include the open C♯ and nothing a half step under it, while the bass spends much of its time on E and A.
Because the verses leave a lot of space, a slightly flat string is easy to hear in Crawling. Strings tuned down a half step tend to drift while they settle, so tune again after the first run-through. Crawling shares its tuning with Papercut, One Step Closer and In the End, so you can play them back to back; on this album only With You and Runaway (a 7-string in B) and A Place for My Head and Forgotten (E♭ Standard) need a different setup.
Tip: Tune to Drop C♯ at A 440 and re-check after one pass, while the slackened strings settle.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop C♯, the notes Crawling was recorded in.
- From E Standard: String 6 down 3 half steps (E → C♯), String 5 down a half step (A → G♯), String 4 down a half step (D → C♯), String 3 down a half step (G → F♯), String 2 down a half step (B → A♯), String 1 down a half step (E → D♯).
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Crawling sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Crawling along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Crawling instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop C♯. Choose Drop D at A 440 and Crawling moves up 97 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
