About In the End
In the End is the eighth track on Hybrid Theory (2000) and the band's biggest early hit. Its famous opening melody is a piano line, and the guitars come in with the chorus. The Songsterr tab writes them in Drop C♯ (C♯ G♯ C♯ F♯ A♯ D♯), like most of the album, with a separate harmonics part for Brad Delson on the same guitar.
The track reads about 2 cents sharp, nothing a listener could hear, so Tune simply opens Drop C♯ at A 440. TuneLit's check from the audio could not be clearer (1.0): the open C♯ sounds and the C under it never does. Below the guitars, though, the bass reaches further down: the Songsterr bass tab tunes its lowest string to B, and the record has a low B under the guitars' lowest note.
If you learned In the End from a chord sheet and it sounds a half step off against the record, check the tuning first: in Drop C♯ every string sits a half step below standard and the 6th string a further whole step. The chorus chords then fall under one finger across the bottom strings. If you play bass along with the record, the low B needs either a 5-string or a 4-string with its lowest string slackened to B.
Tip: For the album version, tune to Drop C♯ at A 440 and check the 6th string against the 4th an octave above before the first chorus.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop C♯, the notes In the End was recorded in.
- From E Standard: String 6 down 3 half steps (E → C♯), String 5 down a half step (A → G♯), String 4 down a half step (D → C♯), String 3 down a half step (G → F♯), String 2 down a half step (B → A♯), String 1 down a half step (E → D♯).
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. In the End sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play In the End along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move In the End instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop C♯. Choose Drop D at A 440 and In the End moves up 97 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
