About A Tout le Monde
A Tout le Monde is the ballad from Youthanasia (1994), Megadeth's only album tuned half a step down. Clean arpeggios open the song, the chorus brings in distorted guitars, and Marty Friedman plays the solo. Every string goes down a half step, E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭, which is why the original sounds in F minor. Songsterr's bass part uses a 5-string bass tuned down a half step as well.
TuneLit measured Youthanasia about 5 ¢ sharp, and this song about 4 ¢ sharp with very high confidence, so its Tune button sets E♭ Standard +5 ¢. The check from the audio hears E♭ as the lowest open string with near certainty.
Two other versions trip players up. The 2007 remake with Cristina Scabbia, À Tout le Monde (Set Me Free) on United Abominations, is in E Standard, a half step higher, so the many E Standard tabs fit that version, not this one. And the 2004 remix of Youthanasia reads about 14 ¢ above the original CD on this song: the same tuning, but a little sharper.
Tip: Tune to E♭ Standard +5 ¢ and test the clean intro arpeggios; use E Standard only for the 2007 remake.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E♭ Standard, every string +4 ¢, the notes A Tout le Monde was recorded in.
- From E Standard: Every string down a half step. No tuner that knows E♭ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 1, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to E♭ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. A Tout le Monde sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play A Tout le Monde along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
