About Us and Them

The long ballad of The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), built on Richard Wright's slow keyboard chords, with Dick Parry's saxophone and David Gilmour's guitar in standard tuning, like every guitar part on the album.

TuneLit measured the first Japanese CD (Toshiba-EMI CP35-3017). The album sits at concert pitch, and Us and Them reads within a cent of A 440. Tune opens plain standard tuning at A 440, and TuneLit's audio check agrees with the open low E. Nothing needs adjusting for this one.

What trips players up is the album around it. Time sits about 23 ¢ flat and The Great Gig in the Sky about 11 ¢ sharp, so if you come here from one of those with their setting still on the tuner, you will be off. Set the reference back to A 440 first.

Tip: The sustained keyboard chords make a good reference: check your open strings against the opening chords before the saxophone comes in.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes Us and Them was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Us and Them sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play Us and Them along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Us and Them instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Us and Them moves up 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
