About Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I–V)

The opening of Wish You Were Here (1975), a long tribute to Syd Barrett. Richard Wright's keyboards set the scene, then David Gilmour's four-note guitar theme and his Strat solos follow, in G minor and in standard tuning.

TuneLit measured a later Japanese CD (Toshiba-EMI TOCP-65560) at about 10 ¢ flat (A ≈ 437.6) for the album. This track reads about 7 ¢ flat, at modest confidence, and its first half closer to 5 ¢ flat; that is close enough to share the album's setting, so Tune opens standard tuning −10 ¢. A difference of a few cents here is hard to hear.

Two things to know. The steel guitar in open G6 (D G D G B E) belongs to Part VI, on the album's last track, not to this one. And TuneLit's audio check could not settle the low string on this track, but every source says standard tuning, so that is what is listed.

Tip: Check your tuning against Gilmour's four-note theme when it enters, not against the long keyboard opening.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string −10 ¢, the notes Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I–V) was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I–V) sits 10 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I–V) along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
