About Joyride

Joyride is the title track and opener of Roxette's 1991 album, recorded at Tits & Ass Studio in Halmstad and EMI Studios in Stockholm, with Jonas Isacsson on lead guitar and Per Gessle on rhythm. It is in A, in standard tuning, with no capo.

TuneLit measured the Japanese CD about 6 cents sharp (A ≈ 441.6), and Tune sets that +6 ¢. Joyride itself reads about 10 cents sharp, a little above the album, so if sustained chords still beat against the record, raise Fine-tune a few cents. The LP needle drop reads 8 to 9 cents lower on every Joyride song, which is the turntable's speed, not the music.

One community tab claims Roxette tuned a half step down. The chords it names, A, D and E, are the record's own key in standard tuning; on a guitar tuned to E♭ they would sound a semitone low, and you would need every shape a fret higher. Stay in standard tuning. The live Joyride on Tourism, recorded in Sydney in 1991, is in A too.

Tip: Ignore the half-step-down tab: play A, D and E in standard tuning, tap Tune for +6 ¢, and add a few cents of Fine-tune if the record still sounds higher.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +6 ¢, the notes Joyride was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Joyride sits 6 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Joyride along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Joyride instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard +6 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Joyride moves down 6 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
