About The Look

The Look opens Look Sharp! (1988) with the riff Jonas Isacsson brought to the session: he had been playing it before, tried it in the solo bars, and Per Gessle moved it to the top of the song. It is in A, in standard tuning, with no capo, and every tab and chord sheet agrees.

TuneLit measured the CD about 1 cent sharp and the LP needle drop within a cent of A 440 as well, on an album that sits at concert pitch. Tune opens plain E Standard at A 440: a normal tuner is exactly right, and the audio check hears the open low E on the record.

The live version on Tourism (1992), recorded in Sydney in December 1991, is a different case: it reads about 10 cents sharp on the CD, a little above the rest of that album, so play along with it from the Tourism page rather than this one. For the studio recording, the only thing to get right is the key: the riff sits in A, so your open String 5 is a handy check against the record.

Tip: Tune to A 440 and compare your open String 5 with the record: the song is in A, so the two should agree.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes The Look was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. The Look sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play The Look along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move The Look instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and The Look moves down 2 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
