About Just Tonight

From the 2010 debut Light Me Up, Just Tonight is in E♭ Standard like most of the album, every string a half step down (E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭). The main tab and the best-rated chord sheet both use it, and the record leans on a low E♭. Taylor Momsen sings; the guitars are Ben Phillips and producer Kato Khandwala, who is credited with guitar on every track of the album.

TuneLit measured the CD at concert pitch, about 0.7 ¢ flat, and Just Tonight reads exactly the album value, so Tune opens E♭ Standard at plain A 440. A Japanese edition of the album reads the same within a fraction of a cent, and TuneLit's semitone check from the audio hears the open low E♭ and agrees.

One tab can mislead you: a Songsterr tab labelled Official is in Drop D. It plays the same notes as the E♭ version without ever using the open low string, so it works, but with different fingerings. If you are playing the album through, stay in E♭ Standard and use the main tab.

The best-rated chord sheet gives you a way into Just Tonight without learning the tab note for note. Before you start, check whether a sheet names the shapes you finger or the pitches you hear: in E♭ Standard an E shape sounds as E♭ and an A shape as A♭, so a sheet written in sounding pitches will look unfamiliar. Learn the changes slowly with the record, and use the song's frequent low E♭ to tell you whether you are in the right place.

Tip: Tune String 6 to E♭ and check it against the low E♭ the record keeps returning to; the Drop D tab labelled Official is not needed.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E♭ Standard, the notes Just Tonight was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down a half step. No tuner that knows E♭ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 1, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to E♭ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Just Tonight sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Just Tonight along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Just Tonight instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E♭ Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Just Tonight moves up a half step and 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
