About Heaven Knows

From Going to Hell (2014), the band's heaviest and most mixed album, produced by Kato Khandwala, with Taylor Momsen on vocals and rhythm guitar and Ben Phillips on lead. Heaven Knows leaves the album's E♭ Standard for plain E Standard, as its Songsterr tab has it, and it never plays the open low E: the riff lives on the A string, String 5.

TuneLit measured the CD at concert pitch, about 0.8 ¢ flat, and Heaven Knows about 3 ¢ flat, still inside the 4 ¢ that count as A 440, so Tune opens E Standard with no offset.

The catch is the album around it. Follow Me Down, the opener, is in E♭ Standard and the title track in Drop C♯, so if you come straight from those songs every string has to go up. Because the open low E never sounds, TuneLit's semitone check from the audio cannot confirm the low string, but the notes in the tab match the record, which is what matters for playing along.

Tip: Tune String 5 to A first and check it against the riff, since the song lives on that string; if it rubs, you are still in the album's E♭.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes Heaven Knows was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Heaven Knows sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play Heaven Knows along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Heaven Knows instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Heaven Knows moves up 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
