About Going to Hell

The title track of the band's 2014 album and one of its heaviest songs, with Taylor Momsen on vocals and rhythm guitar and Ben Phillips on lead. It is in Drop C♯ (C♯ G♯ C♯ F♯ A♯ D♯): E♭ Standard, the album's main tuning, with String 6 taken down another whole step to C♯. The main tab, one of the band's most viewed, uses it, and so does Absolution on the same album.

TuneLit measured the CD at concert pitch, about 0.8 ¢ flat, and this song about 1 ¢ flat, so Tune opens Drop C♯ at plain A 440 with no offset. TuneLit's semitone check from the audio hears the open low C♯ and agrees with the tab.

The low string is the thing to get right. From the album's E♭ Standard only String 6 moves; from standard tuning every string goes down, String 6 by a step and a half. The acoustic version of the song is tabbed in plain E♭ Standard, without the dropped string, so check which version a tab was written from before you start.

Tip: Tune to E♭ Standard first, then lower String 6 until it rings exactly an octave below the open String 4 (C♯).

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop C♯, the notes Going to Hell was recorded in.
  2. From the album's E♭ Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E♭ → C♯); the other strings stay.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Going to Hell sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Going to Hell along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Going to Hell instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop C♯. Choose Drop D at A 440 and Going to Hell moves up a half step and 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
