About Follow Me Down

The opener of Going to Hell (2014), the band's heaviest album, produced by Kato Khandwala, with Taylor Momsen on vocals and rhythm guitar and Ben Phillips on lead. Follow Me Down is in E♭ Standard, every string a half step down (E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭), with the open low E♭ carrying the riff.

TuneLit measured the CD at concert pitch, about 0.8 ¢ flat, and Follow Me Down about 3 ¢ flat, still inside the 4 ¢ that count as A 440, so Tune opens E♭ Standard with no offset. A limited edition and a Japanese deluxe CD read the same, and TuneLit's semitone check from the audio hears the open low E♭ and agrees with the tabs.

The album changes tuning right after this song: the title track drops String 6 a further whole step to C♯ (Drop C♯), and Heaven Knows comes back up to plain E Standard. If you play along with the whole record, check which family each song belongs to; half a step off sounds wrong straight away.

Tip: Tune String 6 to E♭ first and check it against the riff's open low note; the whole song hangs on that string.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E♭ Standard, the notes Follow Me Down was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down a half step. No tuner that knows E♭ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 1, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to E♭ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Follow Me Down sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Follow Me Down along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Follow Me Down instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E♭ Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Follow Me Down moves up a half step and 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
