About Open D

Strum the open strings and you hear a D major chord: D A D F♯ A D. Open tunings are made for slide guitar and for big ringing chords with few fingers.

Open D is a favorite for slide guitar and folk. Four strings change from standard, and none of them goes up, so it is gentle on the strings.

Also written: DADF#AD

How to get there from standard

  • String 6: lower a whole step (E2 → D2)
  • String 5: no change (A2)
  • String 4: no change (D3)
  • String 3: lower a half step (G3 → F♯3)
  • String 2: lower a whole step (B3 → A3)
  • String 1: lower a whole step (E4 → D4)

Quicker from DADGAD: lower String 3 a half step (G3 → F♯3).

Why players use it

Why Open D

Open D, D A D F♯ A D, puts a D major chord on the open strings with the root at the bottom and at the top. The thumb can alternate between the two low D strings while the fingers pick a tune above, and the top three strings, F♯ A D, make a small major chord at every fret for slide lines. Lower String 3 one more half step, to F, and you have Open D minor.

On the records

Who plays in Open D

Older blues books call it Vestapol tuning. Keith Richards moved to it, and to Open E, for the acoustic guitars of the Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (1968) and Let It Bleed (1969), before he settled on Open G. TuneLit has three songs in it: Street Fighting Man and Stray Cat Blues from Beggars Banquet, and You Got the Silver, played with a capo at the 3rd fret.

Playing tips

Playing in Open D

Street Fighting Man sits about 36 cents flat on the record (A ≈ 431), so a guitar in Open D at A 440 sounds sharp against it; its Tune button sets the reference for you. Open E is the same chord shape a whole step higher, so a capo at the 2nd fret plays Open E songs without raising a single string. For slide, hold the slide right over the fret wire and rest it lightly: pressing down pulls the notes sharp.

String tension

Strings and tension

Strings 6, 2 and 1: about 21% less tension. String 3: about 11% less tension (approx., same strings, same scale length).

Most players keep their usual strings for this. If the lowest string feels floppy or buzzes, go one gauge heavier on that string only.
