About Open E
Strum the open strings and you hear an E major chord: E B E G♯ B E. Open tunings are made for slide guitar and for big ringing chords with few fingers.
Open E has the same shape as Open D, a whole step higher. It is bright and loud for slide guitar, but three strings go up, so it adds tension.
Also written: EBEG#BE
How to get there from standard
- String 6: no change (E2)
- String 5: raise a whole step (A2 → B2)
- String 4: raise a whole step (D3 → E3)
- String 3: raise a half step (G3 → G♯3)
- String 2: no change (B3)
- String 1: no change (E4)
Why players use it
Why Open E
Open E, E B E G♯ B E, rings an E major chord, the key a lot of blues and rock is played in on guitar. For slide it has a practical edge: three strings are tuned up, so the strings are tighter than in Open D, the slide meets more resistance, and the notes ring longer with less rattle.
On the records
Who plays in Open E
Duane Allman played much of his slide in Open E. On TuneLit it belongs to the Rolling Stones' acoustic years, six songs in all: No Expectations, with Brian Jones on slide, Jigsaw Puzzle, Prodigal Son and Salt of the Earth on Beggars Banquet (1968), and Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want on Let It Bleed (1969).

Playing tips
Playing in Open E
Stretch new strings before you raise them; for the first day they keep settling flat. Many players keep one guitar in Open E so the neck is not pulled back and forth between tunings. The Beggars Banquet songs do not share one pitch: Jigsaw Puzzle sits about 8 cents sharp and Prodigal Son 11, while No Expectations and Salt of the Earth are 9 cents flat, so start from each song's Tune button.
