About 7 Words
7 Words was Deftones' first single, released a few weeks ahead of Adrenaline in 1995. The verses are tense and rhythmic, Chino Moreno half-rapping over a choppy guitar figure, before the chorus slams in. Stephen Carpenter played it on a six-string in E Standard (E A D G B E), and the riff uses the open low E as its anchor.
TuneLit measured the US CD of Adrenaline about 7 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.7), and 7 Words reads about 4 ¢ sharp on its own, close enough that it uses the album value: E Standard +7 ¢. That is a small offset, but on a song with so much open-string chugging a guitar at A 440 can sound slightly sour against the record, and the Tune button fixes it.
The main tabs agree on E Standard, and TuneLit's check from the audio confirms that the lowest open string is E. An early demo version circulates as a Drop D tab; it does not describe the album recording. The bass is in E Standard as well, so a bassist needs no retuning. Because nothing is dropped, this is one of the easiest Deftones songs to play along with straight away.
Tip: Tune to E Standard with the reference at about A 441.7, then check your open low E against the opening riff before the vocals come in.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +7 ¢, the notes 7 Words was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. 7 Words sits 7 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play 7 Words along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
