About Bored
Bored opens Adrenaline (1995), Deftones' debut, and was its second single. It is a slow, heavy song built on a grinding low riff that leans on two notes a half step apart, with Chino Moreno's quiet verses breaking into shouts. Stephen Carpenter played it on a six-string, and TuneLit lists it in Drop D (D A D G B E): only String 6 moves, a whole step down from E.
TuneLit measured the US CD of Adrenaline about 7 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.7). Bored itself reads about 13 ¢ sharp, but with medium confidence, so its Tune button uses the album value, Drop D +7 ¢. At plain A 440 your guitar would sit a little flat against the record, which you can hear on the long sustained chords.
The catch is the tabs. The most-viewed one writes Bored in E Standard, while a Songsterr version and the best-rated Guitar Pro tab on Ultimate Guitar use Drop D. The CD settles it: the low notes sit on D and E♭ in two octaves and a low E never sounds, and neither a guitar nor a bass in E Standard can reach that D. TuneLit's check from the audio agrees with Drop D. If you learned the song from an E Standard tab, the main riff moves to the open low D and the first fret.
Tip: Drop String 6 to D first, then play the main riff on the open string and the first fret and listen for the D and E♭ of the record.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, every string +7 ¢, the notes Bored was recorded in.
- From the album's E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Bored sits 7 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Bored along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
