About Entombed
Entombed, from Koi No Yokan (2012), is one of Deftones' gentlest songs: a clean, slowly turning guitar figure under Chino Moreno's most melodic vocal. For this album Stephen Carpenter dropped his eight-string's low F♯ to E, giving E B E A D G B E (Drop E), and TuneLit lists the song in that tuning.
TuneLit measured the CD of Koi No Yokan at concert pitch, under 1 ¢ sharp, the most precisely tuned Deftones album, and Entombed reads about 2 ¢ sharp, so the Tune button is plain Drop E at A 440.
The tabs disagree here. The most-viewed transcription writes Carpenter's part for an eight-string in F♯ Standard, while an Ultimate Guitar tab and Carpenter's own account of the album give Drop E. The clean part may simply never touch the lowest string, in which case both read the same. Chino Moreno's guitar is tabbed separately with a very low string 6, and acoustic and E Standard arrangements exist for six-string players. TuneLit's check from the audio cannot settle the low string, which the song seems to use very little.
Tip: On a six-string, E Standard at A 440 matches the eight-string's top six strings; check your open B and high E against the clean figure.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop E, the notes Entombed was recorded in.
- From F♯ Standard: String 8 down a whole step (F♯ → E); the other strings stay.
- Turn String 8 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Entombed sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Entombed along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 8 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Entombed instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop E. Choose Drop E at A 440 and Entombed moves down 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
