About Coming Undone

Coming Undone, from See You on the Other Side (2005), is built on a stomping, hand-clap beat with a tight, chugging riff on top. Munky's Songsterr part uses Korn's A D G C F A D, but it lives one string up from the usual place: String 6 carries more than 40 % of the notes, and the open A is almost absent, with the low string played mostly at frets 5, 6 and 8.

TuneLit measured the album about 14 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 443.5), so Tune opens A Standard +14 ¢. Coming Undone's own reading is higher, about 26 ¢, but with too little confidence to get a setting of its own; if the record still sounds sharp after tuning, raise the reference a few cents by ear.

Most tabs online agree with the A tuning; a few 6-string versions move it to D Standard, which works well here because the riff rarely needs the low A. That makes Coming Undone one of the easiest Korn songs to play on a regular guitar.

Tip: Tune to A Standard +14 ¢, then fine-tune String 6 (D) by ear against the verse riff, where most of the notes are.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string +14 ¢, the notes Coming Undone was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Coming Undone sits 14 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Coming Undone along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.
