About Twisted Transistor

Twisted Transistor opens See You on the Other Side (2005), the first Korn album without Head, so Munky played all the guitars; its video has Xzibit, Snoop Dogg, Lil Jon and David Banner miming the band. The tuning is still A D G C F A D on a 7-string, but the riff never touches the open A: in the Songsterr tab the low string is played almost only at the third fret, a C, which makes up a third of all the guitar notes, with harmonics and high bent notes on top.

TuneLit measured the album about 14 ¢ sharp on the CD (A ≈ 443.5), the second-highest reading in Korn's catalogue, and this song reads about 13 ¢ high, right with it. Tune opens A Standard +14 ¢.

With the open string unused, what matters is that the fretted C sits in tune with the bass and the synths. If the riff sounds sour after tuning, check the third fret, not the open string, and press lightly. The same fact helps 6-string players: in D Standard the low C is out of reach, but the open C of String 4 gives the riff's note an octave up.

Tip: Tune to A Standard +14 ¢ and match the third fret of String 7 to the opening riff's C.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string +14 ¢, the notes Twisted Transistor was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Twisted Transistor sits 14 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Twisted Transistor along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.

Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in A Standard +14 ¢. Choose B Standard at A 440 and Twisted Transistor moves up a half step and 86 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
