About Did My Time
Did My Time, from Take a Look in the Mirror (2003), was written for the soundtrack of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life and became a hit single. It is in the band's 7-string tuning, A D G C F A D, but it never uses the open A: in Munky's Songsterr part more than half the notes are on String 7, and the riff sits on the third fret, a C, with frets 4, 5 and 6 around it.
TuneLit measured the album about 11 ¢ sharp on the CD (A ≈ 442.8), so Tune opens A Standard +11 ¢. This song's own reading landed exactly between two notes with no confidence, so it uses the album's value, and the check from the audio could not decide on the low string either: with no open A played, there is little for it to hear.
Because the open string never sounds, a detuned String 7 will not stand out on its own; you hear it only when the fretted C rubs against the bass. Tune the open A carefully anyway, then check the third fret against the record, since a heavy string pressed hard goes slightly sharp.
Tip: Tune to A Standard +11 ¢, then check the third fret of String 7 (C) against the riff, not just the open string.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string +11 ¢, the notes Did My Time was recorded in.
- From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
- Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Did My Time sits 11 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Did My Time along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.
