About Y'all Want a Single

Y'all Want a Single is Korn's swipe at the music industry, from Take a Look in the Mirror (2003): a blunt, chanted song on a simple low riff. It is played on 7-strings in A D G C F A D, and almost everything happens on String 7. In Munky's Songsterr part more than three quarters of the notes are on that string: the open A, the third fret (C) and the first fret (B♭).

On the record, the open A is the strongest low note TuneLit hears. The album measures about 11 ¢ sharp on the CD (A ≈ 442.8) and this song reads about 16 ¢ high, close enough to share the album's setting, so Tune opens A Standard +11 ¢. The check from the audio agrees that the lowest open string is the A.

It is a good song to learn the Korn feel on, because one string does nearly all the work. Keep your picking hand loose: on a string tuned this low, hitting hard pulls the open A sharp at the start of each note. Bass players will find several tabs in other tunings, including a Drop C version for a 4-string; the record is a 5-string a whole step down.

Tip: Tune to A Standard +11 ¢ and play the open A, the third fret and the first fret of String 7 slowly against the record.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string +11 ¢, the notes Y'all Want a Single was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Y'all Want a Single sits 11 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Y'all Want a Single along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.
