About Given Up
Given Up, from Minutes to Midnight (2007), shows the band's move to plain Drop D (D A D G B E) at its heaviest. Its Songsterr tab, one of the most viewed Linkin Park tabs there, writes Mike Shinoda's and Brad Delson's distorted parts and Phoenix's bass in Drop D, and one version adds a separate part just for the pinch harmonics.
TuneLit reads Given Up about 3 cents below A 440, in line with Minutes to Midnight as a whole, so the Tune button opens ordinary Drop D: lower the 6th string a whole step from standard and you are there. The check from the audio confirms the open D (0.98), and the bass sits most of the time on E, with D, G and F around it.
Coming from the first two albums, the trap is to leave the guitar in Drop C♯: every chord then sits a half step under the record. Given Up is a whole-band Drop D song, so if a friend plays bass along with you, the bass drops too: D A D G, with only the 4th string lowered. Pinch harmonics speak best on a well-tuned, well-intonated guitar, so if they sound weak, check the tuning before you blame your technique.
Tip: Only the 6th string moves: drop it a whole step to D at A 440 and check it against the open 4th string an octave above.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, the notes Given Up was recorded in.
- From E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Given Up sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Given Up along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Given Up instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop D. Choose Drop D at A 440 and Given Up moves up 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
