About What I've Done

What I've Done was the first single from Minutes to Midnight (2007). It opens on piano, and the guitars carry the chorus. Songsterr writes Mike Shinoda's rhythm part on a Stratocaster in Drop D (D A D G B E), while Brad Delson's lead and solo lines are written in E Standard; they can be played on the same Drop D guitar as long as they stay off the 6th string.

The song reads about 2 cents sharp and its album about 1 cent flat; both round to A 440, so Tune opens a normal Drop D. TuneLit's check from the audio agrees with the low D (0.987), although the bass on the record mostly plays F, G, C and B♭ rather than the open D.

The most popular chord sheet on Ultimate Guitar plays the song in standard tuning with a capo at fret 3, a handy way to strum it on an acoustic. For the heavy chorus of the record, though, use the Drop D guitar, which covers both the riff and the lead. Minutes to Midnight is the album where Delson, long wary of guitar solos, started playing them, and the solo on Songsterr needs no special tuning at all.

Tip: Use Drop D at A 440 for the riff and the lead; for strumming the chords on an acoustic, standard tuning with a capo at fret 3 is the easy route.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, the notes What I've Done was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. What I've Done sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play What I've Done along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move What I've Done instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop D. Choose Drop D at A 440 and What I've Done moves up 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
