About 5 Minutes Alone

5 Minutes Alone, from Far Beyond Driven (1994), is a slow, heavy groove song in D Standard (D G C F A D), with all six strings a whole step down. Guitar World lists it among Dimebag Darrell's whole-step-down songs and the main tab agrees; in 1994 Dime said he had moved up to a .046 low string for the album.

TuneLit measured Far Beyond Driven about 44 ¢ flat (A ≈ 428.9) on the CD, and this song reads exactly the album value. Its Tune button sets D Standard at A 429. Sources give the album Dime's usual 60 ¢ offset (A 425), but the record sits higher than that, so tuning to A 425 would leave you noticeably flat.

Tabs in C♯ Standard also exist, because a D that is 44 ¢ flat sounds nearly halfway down to C♯. The record is still a little closer to D, and TuneLit's check from the audio hears D as the lowest open string, so stay with the D Standard tab and set the reference to A 429.

Tip: Set A 429, lower all six strings a whole step to D, and check the open low D against the main groove riff.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to D Standard at A 429, the notes 5 Minutes Alone was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows D Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to D Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. 5 Minutes Alone sits 44 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play 5 Minutes Alone along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
