About I'm Broken

I'm Broken, from Far Beyond Driven (1994), is built on a churning, mid-tempo riff in D Standard (D G C F A D), every string a whole step down. Dime said in 1994 that the album mixed regular tuning with songs down to D, and this is one of the D songs: the main tab and Guitar World agree.

TuneLit measured the album about 44 ¢ flat (A ≈ 428.9) on the CD. I'm Broken reads a little higher, about 36 ¢ flat, but not far enough from the album to get its own setting, so its Tune button sets D Standard at A 429. If long notes still beat against the record, nudge Fine-tune up a few cents.

Alternate tabs in E Standard, C♯ Standard and Drop D also circulate. The audio backs the main one: TuneLit's check hears D as the lowest open string, with high confidence. A Drop D tab lowers only String 6, so its fingering differs from the main tab; for playing along, follow the D Standard tab.

Tip: Use D Standard at A 429 and check your open low D against the main riff; nudge Fine-tune up a few cents if it still sounds flat.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to D Standard at A 429, the notes I'm Broken was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows D Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to D Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. I'm Broken sits 44 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play I'm Broken along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
