About Take Me Down

From Who You Selling For (2016), the band's bluesiest, most classic-rock record, Take Me Down is in plain E Standard, as the Songsterr guitar tab and a separate bass tab have it. Taylor Momsen sings and plays rhythm guitar, Ben Phillips plays lead, and Kato Khandwala produced, as on the first two albums.

TuneLit measured the CD at concert pitch, about 1 ¢ sharp, and Take Me Down about 2 ¢ sharp, so Tune opens E Standard at plain A 440 with no offset. TuneLit's semitone check from the audio hears the open low E and agrees with the tab.

The song is straightforward on its own, but the album around it is not. The opener, The Walls Are Closing In / Hangman, and Oh My God are in E♭ Standard, the title track is in D Standard, and Mad Love sits about 10 ¢ flat, so retune before you move on. If you are coming from the band's earlier, mostly E♭ songs, bring every string back up a half step.

Tip: Check your open low E against the record first: after the two E♭ songs that open the album, a guitar left a half step down is the usual reason Take Me Down sounds wrong.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes Take Me Down was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Take Me Down sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play Take Me Down along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Choose E Standard at A 440 and Take Me Down moves down 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
