About Amazing

Amazing is the long ballad near the end of Get a Grip (1993), the third Aerosmith album produced by Bruce Fairbairn. It is played in plain E Standard, as the popular tabs say, and TuneLit's audio check confirms the open low E on the record.

This is about as close to concert pitch as a record gets: TuneLit measured Amazing less than half a cent flat, on a CD that sits right at A 440 with every song within about 7 cents of it. Tune opens E Standard at A 440, and a guitar set with any normal tuner will match the record with nothing to adjust.

There is no capo, no dropped string and no tab dispute to worry about. If the song sounds off, look at your own guitar rather than the record: the only Get a Grip song in another tuning is Livin' on the Edge, in Drop D, and a String 6 left on D from it is the usual culprit. Crazy and Cryin' use the same setting as Amazing.

Tip: Use a plain A 440 tuner, and make sure String 6 is back on E if you played Livin' on the Edge before it.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes Amazing was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Amazing sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play Amazing along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Amazing instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Amazing is already in E Standard at A 440, so nothing moves. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
