About Livin' on the Edge

Livin' on the Edge is the one Drop D song on Get a Grip (1993): String 6 goes down a whole step to D, and the other five strings stay in E Standard. Guitar World says the song was recorded that way, all three guitar parts and the bass part of the main Songsterr tab drop to D, and TuneLit's audio check hears D as the lowest open string.

The record sits right at concert pitch: TuneLit measured the song within a cent of A 440 (−0.3 ¢), on a CD that measures the same. Tune opens Drop D at A 440, with nothing to correct.

The main tab writes only the solo in standard tuning. You don't need a second guitar for it: if the solo touches String 6, play those notes two frets higher in Drop D, and everything else stays where it is. The rest of Get a Grip, including Cryin', Crazy and Amazing, is in E Standard, so bring String 6 back up a whole step when you move on.

Tip: Lower only String 6, to D, and check it by playing its 7th fret against open String 5: both should give the same A.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, the notes Livin' on the Edge was recorded in.
  2. From the album's E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Livin' on the Edge sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Livin' on the Edge along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
