About Crazy
Crazy is one of the three big ballads on Get a Grip (1993), the third album Aerosmith made with producer Bruce Fairbairn. Like Cryin' and Amazing, it is played in plain E Standard: the popular tabs agree, with no capo and no dropped string, and TuneLit's audio check hears the open low E on the record.
This is the easy end of the Aerosmith catalogue. TuneLit measured the Get a Grip CD right at concert pitch, with no song more than about 7 cents away, and Crazy reads about 2 cents sharp, which no ear can tell from A 440. Tune opens plain E Standard at A 440, so you can play along with the record straight away.
One setting covers all three ballads. The only song on the album that needs a different tuning is Livin' on the Edge, which drops String 6 to D, so if you have just played it, bring String 6 back up a whole step before Crazy, or every low note on that string will be off. The short Intro that opens the CD has no guitar to tune to.
Tip: Tune to A 440 and play along straight away; if Livin' on the Edge left String 6 at D, bring it back up to E first.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes Crazy was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Crazy sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Crazy along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Crazy instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Crazy is already in E Standard at A 440, so nothing moves. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
