About Change (In the House of Flies)

Change (In the House of Flies) is one of the two hit singles from White Pony (2000). It is a slow, hypnotic song built on a clean, rolling guitar figure, with Chino Moreno's quiet verse vocal and a huge, distorted chorus. Chino plays the second guitar, and the tabs put both guitars and the bass in the album's Drop C (C G C F A D).

TuneLit measured the White Pony CD at concert pitch overall, but Change reads about 16 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 444.1), one of three songs on the album that sit that high, so it has its own value: Drop C +16 ¢. The red-cover limited edition, the reissue and the 2020 remaster read the same within a cent, so the offset is on the master. TuneLit's check from the audio agrees that the lowest string is C.

A version of the tab written for E Standard is also widely viewed; it lets you play the shapes without retuning but not with the record. For play-along, the 16 ¢ matters: the clean intro is exposed, and a guitar at A 440 sounds noticeably flat against it. Tap Tune, or set the reference to A 444 by hand before tuning to Drop C.

Tip: Set the reference to A 444 first, tune to Drop C, then check the open low C and the ringing top strings against the clean intro.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop C, every string +16 ¢, the notes Change (In the House of Flies) was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: String 6 down 4 half steps (E → C), String 5 down a whole step (A → G), String 4 down a whole step (D → C), String 3 down a whole step (G → F), String 2 down a whole step (B → A), String 1 down a whole step (E → D).
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Change (In the House of Flies) sits 16 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Change (In the House of Flies) along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
