About Digital Bath
Digital Bath, from White Pony (2000), is one of Deftones' signature moody songs: clean, chorus-soaked guitars in the verses, a soft high vocal from Chino Moreno, and a heavy, slow lift in the chorus. Stephen Carpenter said Chino plays guitar on it, and the tabs give both guitars the album's Drop C (C G C F A D), with the bass in Drop C too.
TuneLit measured the grey-cover CD of White Pony at concert pitch overall (about 3 ¢ flat), and Digital Bath reads about 2 ¢ sharp on its own, so its Tune button is plain Drop C at A 440. Unlike Change and Passenger on the same album, it needs no offset.
TuneLit's check from the audio agrees that the lowest open string is C. You will also find the song tabbed for E Standard, but the heavy chorus rests on the open low C, which a guitar in E Standard cannot reach. From standard tuning, lower every string a whole step and String 6 another whole step. Strings this slack lose some tension, so a slightly heavier set keeps the chords steady.
Tip: Tune to Drop C at A 440 and check the open low C against the first heavy chord of the chorus, where the bass doubles it.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop C, the notes Digital Bath was recorded in.
- From E Standard: String 6 down 4 half steps (E → C), String 5 down a whole step (A → G), String 4 down a whole step (D → C), String 3 down a whole step (G → F), String 2 down a whole step (B → A), String 1 down a whole step (E → D).
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Digital Bath sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Digital Bath along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
