Tune down, keep the feel.

Every half step down takes about 11% of the pull off your strings. The calculator shows it string by string, and the set that brings it back.

One tuner for every tuning

Pick an instrument, pick a tuning, then shift it down or up by half steps. Set A4 anywhere from 300 to 600 Hz, or add fine cents to match a piano or a recording. Every target shows its note, its octave and its frequency, and the reading itself is measured, not guessed: how the tuner listens shows its error note by note.

  • Any tuning × any half-step shift × fine cents × any A4
  • Note names with octave, in C D E, Do Re Mi or German H
  • Reference tones, so you can tune by ear without a mic
  • Works offline once loaded; add it to your home screen
  • Free forever: no ads, no account, no cookies
  • Sound stays on your device: nothing is recorded or sent

Four steps

How to use it

  1. Tap Start tuner and allow the microphone. Your browser asks once.
  2. Pluck one string and let it ring. The tuner finds the nearest string by itself, or tap a string to lock it.
  3. Turn the peg slowly. The meter leans toward Low or High, in words as well as by position, and shows ✓ in tune when the note is right.
  4. Move on to the next string, then play each string once more as a quick check.

Measured

How the tuner hears a guitar

Every figure here comes from the tuner's own code, run on test signals each time the site is built: a clean string tone, a plucked string, and the same tone through a model of a phone microphone, a high-pass filter that turns deep notes down. For a guitar in standard tuning, E2 to E4, readings through the phone-mic model stayed within about 1 ¢, and on clean tones within 0.2 ¢. The tuner calls a string in tune at ±3 ¢, so that leaves room to spare.

error through a phone-mic model your guitar strings

The deepest bass notes are the hardest: in the model the fundamentals of A0 and B0 arrive 20 to 22 dB quieter, and the tuner still reads them within 2 ¢ from their overtones. The low E of a guitar, E2, loses only about 5 dB.

How close it gets

  • ≤ 0.2 ¢largest error on a clean tone, anywhere from A0 to E5
  • ≤ 1 ¢through a phone-mic model, E2 and up
  • ≤ 2 ¢through a phone-mic model at A0 (27.50 Hz) and B0 (30.87 Hz), the deepest bass notes

Questions

Is TuneLit free?

Yes, free forever. There are no ads, no account and no paywall on tunings or A4. Everything on this page works without signing up.

Does it record or upload my sound?

No. The microphone signal is analyzed on your device, in real time, and never leaves it. While the tuner listens, the page makes no network requests.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After the first visit the site keeps its files on your device, so the tuner and tone generator work without a connection. Add it to your home screen to open it like an app.
